Report on the trainer training „Effective Learning“ at the Don Bosco Institute, Nairobi

In the period from 26 to 30 October 2025,  a one-week trainer training for Kenyan vocational school teachers took place at the Don Bosco Vocational School in Nairobi as part of a vocational training project. The project is being implemented by the “Bildungswerk der Baden-Württembergischen Wirtschaft” in Kenya and financed by the BMZ.

Under the title "Effective Learning", effective learning content was imparted with the aim of optimising teaching and learning processes in Kenya's vocational schools.

This week was not only an opportunity for professional development, but also an enriching experience for everyone involved.

Program Overview

The training program included several building blocks that are crucial for the development of effective teaching methods:

  • Activation of prior knowledge: Participants learned the importance of activating students' prior knowledge in order to better anchor new content.
  • Classroom management: Effective techniques for creating a positive learning environment were discussed to improve the learning atmosphere.
  • Competence development: The training focused on the promotion of key competencies that are essential for the students' professional future.
  • Implementation of the in-depth structures: The participants were given insights into how they can convey learning content in depth and sustainably.
  • Design of internally differentiated learning units: Here, it was worked out how teachers can respond to the different learning needs of their students.

Active participation and appreciative atmosphere

The active participation of the participants was an outstanding feature of this training. From the beginning, the teachers showed great interest and got involved through questions and discussions. It was impressive to see how they worked independently in active phases and contributed their experience. The atmosphere was appreciative and respectful throughout, which encouraged the exchange of ideas and best practices.

The excellent organization of the training contributed significantly to the success of the program. From the selection of the premises to the technical equipment, everything was perfectly tailored to the needs of the participants. The above-average equipment of the Don Bosco Institute enabled the effective implementation of the training content.

Personal experiences of the trainer

In addition to the professional training sessions, I also had the opportunity to experience the beauty of Kenya and the warmth of the people up close. An impressive experience was the ride with a Matatu, the typical Kenyan minibus. This trip was not only an adventure, but also a wonderful way to experience Nairobi's vibrant culture.

Another highlight was the safari in Nairobi's National Park. The lush green vegetation and the variety of wildlife were breathtaking. It was an unforgettable experience, to observe rhinos, giraffes and lions in their natural habitat. These experiences have not only broadened my horizons, but also increased my appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Kenya.

In addition, I visited the market in Ngong and the famous Maasai market in Nairobi. Here I was able to gather authentic local experiences, purchase handmade souvenirs and enjoy the delicious flavours of Kenyan cuisine. The encounters with the friendly vendors and the lively atmosphere were inspiring.

Conclusion

Overall, the trainer training at the Don Bosco Institute was a great success. The combination of professional training and personal experiences made this week an unforgettable experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such dedicated teachers and experience their passion for teaching and learning.

Many thanks go to the entire team of the Don Bosco Institute for the excellent organization and hospitality. I look forward to seeing the positive changes that have been initiated by this training in Kenya's vocational schools. Together, we can further advance education in Kenya and provide students with the best conditions for their professional future.

This week has not only expanded professional knowledge, but also touched hearts and made friends. I can't wait  to maybe go back again and see the progress that the teachers and their students will make.
